The “downside side” of following people you like

What does it mean when we say “following people that you like”? How do we define it?

We talk about the display of a strange behavior, where we sometimes follow people around us who are setting a trend even though we know deep down that we should not. How weird is that?

Indeed, sometimes we let ourselves being guided by the desire to not disappoint our friends, and thus follow what they suggest even though we actually don’t want to! We should be aware that among your friends you could experience certain dynamics exposing you to be a target to be taking advantage of in the case you weak-minded.

We are willing to make concessions to those around us and often we do not receive the same courtesy back from them. That is simply unacceptable and not desirable.

Well, yes it is true. It’s good to have a group of friends with whom you feel a good connection, and be around them and enjoy their presence. Yet, do not mistake the feeling of having people around you as a comfort. Because you may still be feeling quite alone, and if that is what you need then that is ok.

It is a great thing to have a group of friends that push you and will elevate your “game”. But if the group you hang out with suppresses you, we recommend that you rather stay alone!

You probably remember what it felt like in the past when you followed the wrong people?
Here is the situation that may sound familiar to you! You have a test to write in school and all your friends are telling you that they are not going to study, they say that they rather watch TV, and just don’t bother with reviewing the lesson notes related to the test. Then it came down to actually writing the test and your friends ended up studying and left you behind by achieving a higher mark than you! Do you think that’s fair?

In hindsight, when you think about it, some of the stories may sound funny, but some are less so because people have lost themselves in the process because they followed bad advice.

As we said before, it’s very important that we choose the right friends to be around and also to know what’s best for us.
